Breast reconstruction can be an important part of the emotional and physical healing process following a mastectomy. Many women feel that reconstruction gives them a sense of 'wholeness" and helps to restore their femininity. Reconstruction can sometimes be done the same day as the mastectomy or months to years later. There are various ways to reconstruct a breast including implants, autologous tissue, and a combination of both. The ultimate goal of reconstruction, despite what method is used, is for the breasts to appear symmetric in clothing and bras.
